The Unesco-listed çri hr (Old City) is at its core amid an exotically crenelated arc of the fortress wall. Around it are elegantly lighted stone homes and tree-lined lanes dotted with luxury stores. The city has been a crucible of architectural innovation since the second oil boom began about 2006, and some of the greatest new structures are jaw-dropping wonders. Meanwhile, loving couples canoodle their way through woodland parks and hold hands on the Caspian-front bulvar (promenade), whose greens and opal blues make Baku’s desert-ringed position look ridiculous.

Visiting Horse Club Yanar Dag, the place where natural burning gas comes out of the ground caused by tectonic clashes. Yanar Dag has been mentioned in ancient historical books since the 5th century.
