Discover Baku, a truly contemporary city criss-crossed by history. From the modern elegance of the Flame Towers to the medieval old city full of life.
Few cities in the world are changing as swiftly as Baku, and nowhere else in the Caucasus do East and West merge as smoothly or as chaotically as in Baku. The Unesco-listed çri hr (Old City) is at its core amid an exotically crenelated arc of the fortress wall. Around it are elegantly lighted stone homes and tree-lined lanes dotted with luxury stores. The city has been a crucible of architectural innovation since the second oil boom began about 2006, and some of the greatest new structures are jaw-dropping wonders. Meanwhile, loving couples canoodle their way through woodland parks and hold hands on the Caspian-front bulvar (promenade), whose greens and opal blues make Baku’s desert-ringed position look ridiculous.
