A historically history region with some of the greatest cuisine you will ever experience, landscape ranging from beaches to mountains, and the magnificent city of Istanbul. A series of historical characters and civilizations, including the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, have all left their imprint on this old Silk Road stopover. Experiencing their legacy takes you from the sultan’s and his harem’s private chambers in Istanbul’s huge Topkap Palace to the lovely and enigmatic Lycian ruins on Mediterranean beaches.
Turkey’s varied landscapes, ranging from Aegean olive fields to eastern steppe, create a beautiful backdrop for the country’s numerous famous ruins. The vertiginous Mediterranean coastline, Cappadocia’s otherworldly ‘fairy chimney’ rock formations and wavy valleys, the alpine meadows of the Kaçkar Mountains, and golden beaches such as the 18km-long Patara present some of the country’s most spectacular views. Whether you sip a çay and gaze out over mountain-ringed Lake Eirdir or explore the rugged hinterland on the southwest coast’s various peninsulas, Turkey’s beauty will leave an indelible impact.
