Everything you’ve never heard about Serbia is true: it’s diverse, hospitable, and a lot of fun. The best part is that this landlocked Balkan country is still deliciously off the beaten path. While the tenacious Serbian spirit is expressed in Belgrade’s world-class nightlife and Novi Sad’s huge EXIT Festival, explore beyond these ancient metropolises to find a crucible of cultures and an unpolluted environment perfect for adventure.
Subotica, an art nouveau town, celebrates its Austro-Hungarian roots, while bohemian Ni echoes the clip-clop of Roma horse carts and minaret-studded Novi Pazar nudges the most sacred of Serbian Orthodox monasteries. Wine areas and thermal springs nestled in undulating hills have been around since the Roman era. Ancient traditions mingle with après-ski bling on the slopes of Kopaonik, Zlatibor, and Stara Planina, while the super-scenic Tara and erdap National Parks abound with hiking, biking, rafting, and kayaking activities.
